Morrow adds two Liebherr 620 HC-L cranes, expanding its luffing jib crane fleet. The 620 HC-L combines high lifting capacity with compact design – ideal for space-constrained urban sites.

From left to right: Andrew Stalter (Business Development Manager Morrow Equipment Company), Michael Heacock (Vice President of Sales Morrow Equipment Company), Isolde Liebherr (Member of the administrative board at Liebherr-International AG, Chris Smith (Vice President of Service Morrow Equipment Company), Marco Guariglia (Managing Director Liebherr Tower Cranes), Stefanie Wohlfarth (Vice president of the administrative board at Liebherr-International AG), Peter Juhren (President and Chief Operating Officer Morrow Equipment Company), Andrew Morrow (Morrow Equipment Company), Olivia Morrow (Morrow Equipment Company), Stefan Brandt (Divisional Manager Liebherr), John Mader (Morrow Equipment Company)

Morrow Equipment Company, one of the leading tower crane rental firms in North America, is expanding its fleet with two new Liebherr 620 HC-L luffing jib cranes. The new luffing jib cranes mark a significant enhancement to Morrow’s portfolio, bridging the gap between its existing mid-range and large-capacity cranes.

Morrow is excited to complement their existing fleet with the new Liebherr 620 HC-L

“We are thrilled to add the new Liebherr 620 HC-L to our fleet of luffing jib cranes to complement our portfolio of 710, 542 and 357 HC-Ls,” says Peter Juhren, President and Chief Operating Officer of Morrow. “Liebherr has been a great partner, and this new luffing jib crane will enable us to compete with our competitors and offer more value and a better option in between our larger and middle range cranes. We will further continue to add more to our fleet in the coming months.”

The 620 HC-L is the newest generation of Liebherr luffing jib cranes

The 620 HC-L 18/36 represents the latest in Liebherr’s luffing jib crane development, setting new standards for luffing jib cranes in the 600 metre-tonne segment. Designed to meet the needs of space-constrained and demanding urban job sites, the 620 HC-L has a maximum lifting capacity of 18 tonnes in single-fall and up to 36 tonnes in two-fall operation. With a 65-metre jib length and the new Load-Plus function, the crane can increase its lifting capacity by up to 76 percent on specific load curves, opening new possibilities for project planning and execution.

Another one of the 620 HC-L standout advantages is its space efficiency. With a minimal out-of-service radius of just 12 metres and an operating radius of only 4.1 metres, the 620 HC-L is optimally suited for inner-city construction and jobsites where space is at a premium. With the addition of the two 620 HC-L luffing jib cranes to Morrow’s rental fleet, Liebherr reinforces its commitment to providing high-performance, technically advanced cranes that meet the complex demands of its customer and modern construction sites.

ACT Tower Crane 50: 2025 data reveals industry’s pivot toward stability

Fleet adjustments and workforce reductions mark a year of recalibration for North America’s tower crane sector.

After several years of slow expansion and cautious optimism, the U.S. tower crane sector is showing signs of restraint. Analysis of the 2025 ACT Tower Crane 50 reveals a few of North America’s leading companies have pulled back slightly, trimming fleets, downsizing teams and reevaluating depot footprints. The contraction is not seismic, but it is telling.

People power

Compared to last year, the 2025 ACT Tower Crane 50 index shows a slight dip in fleet size and branch locations, but an uptick in workforce. The total number of tower cranes fell from 2,442 to 2,411, while branch locations dropped from 281 to 274. Interestingly, despite this modest contraction, overall employment increased from 9,440 to 9,942 workers. The numbers reflect a sector recalibrating fleet and footprint while continuing to invest in its workforce.

Morrow Equipment maintains its longstanding position at Number 1, backed by a powerful fleet of 572 cranes and a dominating presence. Maxim Crane Works follows at Number 2, leveraging its expansive national footprint and workforce of over 2,400 employees. Uperio North America, ALL Family of Companies and Stafford Tower Crane round out the top five.

A closer look

As the market shifts, this year’s ACT Tower Crane 50 reveals a subtle reshuffling. Canada remains a strong player on the list, with five companies in the top 20 and growing regional representation. Québec-based Guay exited the ranking after selling off its tower crane fleet. Sims Crane and Crane Service Inc. have also left the tower crane sector. Two newcomers, Bay Crane Companies and Torre Crane, made notable debuts in 2025.

Bay Crane ranks in the top half of the list, entering the ACT Tower Crane 50 at Number 15 – a strong start for a newcomer. The company reports a fleet of 45 tower cranes, supported by a substantial employee base of 1,230 and 24 depot locations across the United States. With a largest tower crane model listed as the Terex Peiner SK575 (35 metric ton capacity), Bay Crane’s equipment mix appears geared toward high-capacity, general construction work.

Torre Crane also joins the ACT Tower Crane 50 this year, debuting at Number 18. The company posted a fleet of 35 tower cranes, a notable total for a regional operator. Torre operates from two depots, with a relatively lean team of 30 employees. Despite its compact footprint, Torre’s fleet includes high-capacity models like the Terex Comedil CTT 720B-40 (40 metric tons), suggesting the company focuses on technically demanding jobsites.

The overall picture is one of strategic consolidation. We are seeing crane fleets and depots right-sized, but a larger workforce. In a market that continues to adjust to shifting demand, companies appear focused on sharpening service, regional coverage and personnel depth rather than sheer crane volume.

Methodology

The ACT team gathers data year-round for the ACT Tower Crane 50. Starting in June of each year, we send out survey forms to companies that we know own tower cranes. Our database contains about 250 companies in the realm of tower crane operations, and the team tries to cast a wide net. Some companies choose not to participate in our ACT Tower Crane 50 ranking, and we respect their decision to keep fleet information private.

Above downtown San Francisco rises the Salesforce Tower. A gleaming, glass structure that, when completed, will be the tallest building in the Western United States and the 7th tallest in the entire country. Two Liebherr 542 HC-L Litronic luffing boom cranes were deployed to construct the 61-story office building to a height of 1,070 feet, each with a single part lifting capacity of 19.8 tons.

Both tower cranes were erected in Fall 2015 and are planned to be dismantled by late Spring 2017. Each crane was initially erected with an initial height-under-hook (HUH) of 135 feet. Tower one will rise to 1067 ft HUH with a hook reach of 197 ft and tower two will level out at 1086 ft HUH with a hook reach of 213 ft. Eleven tie-in assemblies connect each crane to the core of the structure.

When completed the 970 ft building will cover 1.4 million square feet and house a 5.4 acre city park with redwoods included. A concrete core is surrounded by uniform steel and a glass curtain wall system. Morrow’s engineering department assisted with the location and positioning of the cranes and tie-in connections to determine the most suitable connection and placement points for the building. Many revisions to equipment application drawings were required during the refinement of the cranes locations and tie-in connections.

Salesforce Tower is a joint project between Clark Construction and Hathaway Dinwiddie for client Boston Properties and Hines. The building is scheduled to open in 2018 at a cost of 1.1 billion USD.

One of the largest tower cranes in North America, a Liebherr 1800 C, was recently on a historic job site in Dearborn, Michigan USA. The Rouge Plant, built in the 1920’s by auto magnate Henry Ford, was undergoing a major rebuild. Part of the rebuild project included the replacement of the “C” blast furnace. The Liebherr 1800 C played a significant role in the furnace upgrade. Initially, the tower crane assisted in the demolition phase of the more than 50-year-old steel furnace. Once the teardown was completed, the 1800 C was used to erect a new furnace fitted with the latest in steel-making technology. While Ford no longer owns the steel facilities at the Rouge, production continues to this day.

SeverStal North America purchased the steel operations a few years ago and invested US$300 million to upgrade the furnace. Graycor, the project general contractor and Metro Industrial Contracting selected the 1800 C from Morrow Equipment because of the crane’s ability to adapt to the specific requirements of the Dearborn project. Configured with a hook height of 270 feet (82m) and a 218-ft (66m) jib, the 66-ton (60t) tower crane was well suited to the tight work area adjacent to the furnace. The project was completed the end of October 2007. The “C” blast furnace was off line for only 100 days during the demolition-replacement process. This ambitious construction schedule, the result of 18 months of planning, was accomplished through the successful coordination of skilled personnel and high-capacity lifting equipment, like the Liebherr 1800 C from Morrow.
